Indian Astrology
Indian astrology, also known as Moon astrology, has its origins in the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts. In the Indian astrology system there are 12 zodiac signs as given below:
  • Aries
  • Taurus
  • Gemini
  • Cancer
  • Leo
  • Virgo
  • Libra
  • Scorpio
  • Sagittarius
  • Capricorn
  • Aquarius
  • Pisces
Rashis or Moon signs were developed at a later stage to simplify Indian astrology/Moon astrology. Constellations are the base of the Indian astrology system. There are 27 constellations. The 28th constellation Abhijeet is not taken into consideration while studying the horoscope.
As per Vedas and Shastras there are five elements in total, which are:
  1. Fire
  2. Water
  3. Earth
  4. Air
  5. Sky
All these five elements are taken into consideration while studying a horoscope, along with Constellations and Rashis or Moon sign. The fifth element, sky, or ether, is given utmost importance. Ascendant is the most effective point in anyone’s chart because it signifies ‘self’ and this point (ascendant) is ruled by the sky element.
Indian astrology or Moon astrology system follows a calender based on constellations. It has the Moon in the centre. The Moon governs the mind and emotions. Moon is the fastest moving planet in the Zodiac and ‘no event is possible without Moon’s support’. Those who know a bit of western astrology would know that there is a ‘void of course’ principle in western astrology which means that if there are no aspects to Moon, no event will take place. As such, both the luminaries are given equal importance but Moon because it governs the mind has been given prime importance in Vedic or Moon astrology.
Indian Astrology is the earliest form of the Astrology and over the long course of time it has been modified only a little. Its correctness and exactness as a science of deduction or fortune-telling is superlative even today. To achieve the most accurate results, even to the minute of the details, indian astrology is used as it covers every area of the human existence. Indian Astrology encircles everything from everyday events to spirituality, prediction, psychology, religion and healing.
Indian astrology is believed to be highly authentic and its predictions are considered to be most accurate. Since it is based on the actual constellations of stars this is the most widely used system of astrology across the world. Sun as the basic of life in Indian astrology. It is source of energy and spirituality. Indian astrology helps in removing many kind of doshas because of bad karmas. Vedic Indian astrology truly helps in meeting soul to its final destination that is God.
There is also here and there evidence that suggests astrology is extremely old subject. However, controversy attends the question of whether they were genuinely recorded at the time or merely ascribed to ancient rulers by posterity. The documented history of Jyotish is associated with the interaction of Indian and Hellenistic cultures in the Indo-Greek period Yavanajataka or the Brihat-Samhita are oldest surviving treatise. As a matter of fact Indian astronomy and astrology developed together. Aryabhatta and Varahmihir were scientists and astrologers at the same time. In addition to the the theories of Aryabhata in the Aryabhatiya- Pancha-Siddhāntika of Varahamihir is also popular.
Planetary transits
Planetary transits, though they have been given importance in Vedic system, because there is Dasha system in place many astrologers do not combine Dashas and transits whereas it is necessary to do so.
Yearly Predictions
Varshphala developed by Tajik Neelkanthi has become integral part of the Indian astrology system. Western astrology, just like Moon astrology, has a feature called ‘Solar Return’ but the Indian astrology system has more parameters based on aspects like Sneha and Vaira Drishtis. Likewise, in western solar return they give much more importance to part of fortune, part of success etc. – the same way there are Sahams in Moon astrology system which play a major role in predicting the year ahead. Muntha is also a very special feature in Varshphala System.
